Torchlight gameplay

Gameplay

The player controls a lone hero who explores a series of randomized dungeons, where they fight large numbers of enemies and collect equipment, gold, and other loot. The game also features a single town which serves as a hub, to which the player character can periodically return to buy and sell items toNPC vendors and obtain quests. As the protagonist delves into the dungeon, they are presented with a series of quests and battle a series of unique bosses that advance the main storyline. Optionally, players may take on side quests, random quests or visit branching dungeon areas. The graphics are 3D and viewed from an overhead perspective, similar to the isometric perspective used in the originalDiablo. The game is controlled using a point-and-click mouse interface and keyboard hotkeys.
The game generates each level of the dungeon by assembling modular "chunks" of the game environment. Each chunk is designed by hand and may be composed of multiple rooms. They can contain scripted events and interactive objects such as levers that open secret doors or cause bridges to move. This approach to level generation is intended to create dungeons with more purposeful design, instead of environments that simply look like "crossword puzzles that have been extruded upwards."
As in Fate, players have a permanent pet which fights alongside them and can carry and sell loot. The initial pet can be either a wolf dog or a lynx, and players can feed the pet fish to transform it into different creatures.
Also present in the game is a retirement system, in which players can pass on an heirloom item from an old character to a newly-created one, likened to a New Game Plus game mode.

Character classes

Torchlight features three character classes.
  • The Destroyer is a wandering warrior skilled in melee combat, although he also has the ability to call upon ancestral spirits to produce magical effects.
  • The Alchemist is a spellcaster drawn to magical power of Ember. He can fire blasts of magic and electricity from his specialized focus glove and can summon imps and steampunk-styled robots.
  • The Vanquisher is an elite city guard, sent undercover to investigate the town of Torchlight. She specializes in ranged weapons and can also use traps against her foes.
The player develops their character by placing points into class-specific skill trees. Further, there is a separate class of spells that any character can learn from scrolls, regardless of class.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Thursday, November 5, 2009 3:03 PM

Star Wars: The Old Republic (TOR) is an upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game based in the Star Wars universe.Currently in development by BioWare Austin and a supplemental team at BioWare Edmonton, the game was first announced on October 21, 2008 at an invitation-only press event. The Old Republic will be released as a PC title. A novelization related to the game is scheduled to come out "around the game release time."

Members of the two main factions – the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire – will have different moralities; the project's key focus is to differentiate between the player's faction and morality. Each faction will contain different classes, Five classes have been confirmed: the Bounty Hunter and Sith Warrior[10] for the Sith Empire, and the TrooperSmuggler, and Jedi Knight for the Galactic Republic. Although each class will have a distinct storyline, they will be integrated with the game's overall arc.
Gameplay

Players' choices will permanently open or close storylines and affect players'  (NPC) companions. The game's developers believe that the game will provide more context for characters' missions and quests than other MMORPGs offer. Every character in the game, including the player character, will feature full voice dialog to enhance gameplay, and interactions with those characters will feature a dialogue system similar to that used in the Mass Effect series.Players will be able to choose from a variety of NPCs, although spending time with a single companion will help more in developing story and content than dividing time among several, and may even develop a love interest. It is possible for players to "blow it big time" if they fail to meet NPCs' expectation. Players will also have access to dozens of planets, including Korriban, Ord Mantell, Nal Hutta, Tython, Coruscant, andBalmorra.

[edit]Setting

The Galactic Republic stood for generations as a bastion of peace in a galaxy of warring star systems. Protected by its stalwart Jedi guardians, the Republic held the greatest hope for the progress of civilization and galactic unity. Deep in unknown space, however, a mighty Sith Empire was forged, led by dark Sith Lords who dreamt of galactic domination and vengeance against their ancient Jedi enemies. After centuries of preparation, the time came for the Sith to make their return. With a massive fleet and an awe-inspiring army of fearless troops, the Sith Emperor launched a surprise assault, quickly capturing dozens of worlds in the Outer Rim, and sparking a war unlike any other in the galaxy’s history. From the frozen wastes of Ilum to the desert plains of Dathomir, violent battles killed untold millions. Despite its avowed neutrality, surface structures on the water-covered world of Manaan were completely destroyed, forcing the Selkath to retreat to their ocean underworld. Other star systems fared worse—some destroyed, others left uninhabitable. The carnage concluded with the Sith Empire sacking the Republic's capital planet of Coruscant and forcing the Republic Senate into the controversial Treaty of Coruscant. In the years since the treaty, fear and uncertainty have gripped the galaxy, enabling the Sith Emperor to pursue his own mysterious purposes while the Republic has made efforts to rebuild its infrastructure and adjust military priorities to the new galactic landscape. Now, tensions between the Republic and the Empire are running high, and a series of border skirmishes and proxy wars have broken out, even on planets as historically peaceful as Alderaan. The uneasy truce established by the Treaty of Coruscant is quickly tearing apart at the seams, and a return to all-out war has begun in all but official terms. A new generation of heroes, both light and dark, emerges to face the difficulties of these chaotic times, and fight for the fate of the galaxy in this most desperate age.

[edit]Plot

The story takes place in the Star Wars fictional universe shortly after the establishment of a tenuous peace between the re-emergent Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic, 300 years after the events of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games and more than 3,500 years before the events in the Star Wars films. The Jedi are held responsible for the success of the Sith and chose to relocate from Coruscant to Tython, where the Jedi order had been initially founded, to seek guidance from the Force. The Sith control Korriban, where they re-established a Sith Academy. The game begins as new conflicts arise.
A collaborative effort between Bioware, Lucasarts and Dark Horse Comics has resulted in a webcomic entitled "Star Wars: The Old Republic: Threat of Peace", the purpose of which is to set up the story as the game opens.

[edit]Development

The Old Republic marks BioWare's first entry into the MMORPG market, and it will be the second Star Wars MMORPG after Star Wars Galaxies. Bioware had long been interested in working on a MMORPG, but waited until they had "the right partners, the right team, and the right I.P."A major focus in the game is on developing characters' individual stories and, in October 2008, BioWare considered this game to have more story content than all of their other games combined. The writing team, which has been working on the game longer than any other developers, includes 12 full-time writers, some of whom have worked on the project for more than two years. The game's first cinematic trailer, "Deceived," was shown at the Electronic Arts 2009 E3 Press Conference on June 1, 2009. A public live demo was shown for the first time at the Gamescom. On September 29, 2009, Bioware announced that they would be accepting applications for testers from the game community. Within minutes, the official website was down due to traffic, and Bioware announced shortly after that the site was being changed in order to accommodate the increase in visitors. No date was given in regard to when the selected testers would be allowed to test the game.

Uncharted 2 : among thieves Gameplay

Tuesday, November 3, 2009 10:36 PM

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is an action-adventure video game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. It is the sequel to the 2007 game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Officially announced in the December 2008 issue of Game Informer, the game was released in North America on October 13, 2009, and in Europe on October 16, 2009.

Uncharted 2 is a third-person perspective action-adventure game, with the player in control of Nathan Drake. Nathan is physically adept and is able to jump, climb, and scale along narrow ledges and wall faces to get between points. Nathan can be equipped with up to two firearms—a single-handed gun and a two-handed weapon—and a limited supply of grenades; Nathan can pick up weapons, automatically replacing the existing weapon he was using, and additional ammo from downed foes. The player can direct Nathan to take cover behind corners or low walls using either aimed or blind-fire to kill his enemies. The player can also have Nathan free-fire while moving. If Nathan is undetected by his enemies, the player can attempt to use stealth to take out enemies, such as by sneaking up behind them to knock them out with one hit, or by pulling an unsuspecting foe over a ledge that Nathan is hanging from. Some areas of the game require the player to solve a puzzle with the use of Nathan's diary that provides clues towards its solution. When enabled, a hint system provides the player direction of where their next objective is.Gameplay

Throughout the game are special treasures that may be hidden or in difficult-to-reach places that the player can collect. Collecting these treasures, along with completing certain feats within the game, tracked by the awarding of Trophies, give the player in-game money to use to unlock extra content on the disc, including concept art, game movies, and game cheats such as guns with infinite ammo.

Multiplayer

Uncharted 2 also features both competitive and co-operative multiplayer. The co-op multiplayer allows a maximum of three players to take the roles of Nathan and two other 'hero' companions and features missions involving gunfights, platforming, and teamwork-based objectives. Players can also assist their comrades should they become critically injured or be grabbed by an enemy.
The competitive multiplayer allows a maximum of ten players to play against each other. Four competitive modes are featured:'Deathmatch', 'Plunder', 'Elimination' and 'Chain Reaction'. Deathmatch features two teams of five, with one team acting as 'heroes' and the other as 'villains'. Players can choose their own appropriate character models (such as Nathan, Sully, Elena, and new characters Tenzin and Chloe for the 'heroes' team). As players accrue points and rank up, they can purchase more skins for both heroes and villans.Players can select two Boost abilities which assist them in the matches. Plunder is similar to the traditional capture the flag game mode, and sees each team attempt to capture the treasure from a central point in the map and return it to their base; the player carrying the treasure is slowed down a great deal, and may also choose to hurl the treasure away at any point, in order to keep it out of reach of the enemy, or to pass it to a teammate.'Elimination' has two teams of five players against each other with the objective of killing everyone on the other team. In Elimination, the player does not respawn. The goal is to eliminate the other team three out of five times. 'Chain Reaction' has the player capturing flags, but the player must do them in a specific order - one team works out from their base needing to capture 1 through 5 while the other team starts out from their home and needs to snag 5 through 1.
'Gold Rush' is a cooperative mode of play where 2-3 players must team up to get a treasure, randomly spawned on the map, and take it back to their base much like Plunder. However, All enemies try to stop the players from returning the treasure. If a player goes down and is not revived before the timer goes out, they will not come back until the next round. In each consecutive round the enemies become tougher to defeat.
Due to the reduction of the quality of the game's visuals if a split-screen multiplayer were to be included, there is no offline multiplayer for the time being.
On September 15, 2009, another beta was released and expired on October 12, 2009.
An open beta was released to the EU and US on the September 29, 2009 via the PSN store.

This new frontier in rhythm gaming is electrifyingly fun, but the cover charge is steep.

The Good

  • Diverse, entertaining tracklist
  • Well-crafted turntable peripheral
  • Difficulty levels range from very welcoming to very challenging
  • Captures the thrill of creating a hot mix.

The Bad

  • Costs as much as two full-price games
  • Crossfader tab can be tricky
  • Doesn't embrace creativity of actual mixing.
As is the case with almost every rhythm game out there, playing DJ Hero will not prepare you to be an actual DJ. The songs are premixed, the sound effects are preloaded, and the wheel (just one) of steel is actually plastic. Yet, as is also the case with many rhythm games, this is no barrier to having a whole lot of fun. DJ Hero comes with a turntable peripheral that is well engineered and responsive, though it may take a little ingenuity and creative furniture rearrangement to find your optimal playing position. There's a large, diverse catalog of energetic mixes to choose from, many of which are fun just to listen to, let alone play. As you get the hang of tapping, scratching, and crossfading, DJ Hero grabs a hold of you like the best rhythm games do, drawing you into the music and triggering the adrenal rush of performance. Unfortunately, the price of admission to this show is steep: the game and the required turntable cost as much as two full-price games, and significantly more than other single-instrument rhythm games. And those hoping to flex some creative muscle will likely be disappointed with the limited opportunities to do so. Yet despite these drawbacks, DJ Hero is immensely entertaining, and manages to earn its place as a sparkling new star in the rhythm game heavens.
